Curriculum Vitae

Bertrand Wert joined the CIR as a researcher in September 2003, whilst studying towards his PhD at the University of Paris IX-Dauphine (Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire en socio-économie IRIS-CREDEP, UMR 71 70 – CNRS), under the supervision of John Crowley.

His PhD thesis focuses on: “The monopoly of violence beyond the nation-state. The post national and post-state constellation in relation to the evolution of public security governance in the metropolitan area of Lille (FR)”.

His research project deals with the postnational and post-state constellation, and its future role, in regards to both European governance, and to changing attitudes which reflect what is an increasingly cosmopolitan society.

Bertrand is fascinated by the relationship between the above mentioned angles and the question of identity - be it historic, inherited or political. In particular, his PhD looks at the mutations of the nation-state in the field of public security and his empirical work is based on the case study of the transnational metropolitan area of Lille.

He has a BA in History (Maîtrise) and Geography (Licence) (University of Lyon II), a Master (DEA) in Political Science (University of Paris IX-Dauphine), a second Master (DEA) from the Free University of Brussels - ULB, and an MA from the University of Québec (Montréal) - UQAM.

He is currently involved in the INTERREG IIIB European project “SEPTENTRION: from fortified to sustainable cities”, as coordinator of the 19-cities network www.septentrion-ieper.be / www.septentrion-nwe.org
