Futures - Attitudinal

Please rate the following attitudinal futures with regard to

(a)     how likely they are [ r ]

(b)     how desirable they are [ O ]

where ‘1’ corresponds to ‘very likely’ / ‘very desirable’ and ‘5’ to ‘very unlikely’ / ‘not desirable at all’. Use ‘9’ if you do not know or have no opinion.

Future 1: ‘Individualism predominates’
Consumerism prevails and there is an emphasis on the immediate individual gratification of needs at the expense of solidarity, social / political responsibility and environmental consciousness. Technology is viewed positively and speed is valorised.

Future 2: ‘Communitarianism predominates’

There is a strong sense of ‘belonging’ and societal responsibility, albeit limited to the ‘in-group’ (cultural, religious, regional, or local). Individual autonomy is secondary to social capital. Technology is viewed with mistrust. The local environment is valued greatly.

Future 3: ‘Pluralism and tolerance prevails’
A cosmopolitan (open) attitude combined with tolerance towards difference supports pluralism and liberalism, where individual autonomy is valued, albeit balanced with solidarity (towards others and the environment). Technology is valued as a means to an end.

Future 4: ‘Marked polarization and friction’

There is a strong divide within societies across the urban / rural dimension and cultural / religious traditions with attitudes differing widely according to structural criteria and life conditions. This polarisation leads to friction and conflict.
