Community Conflicts in Europe – Examining Divergences and Convergences
December 1, 2005, Vienna, AustriaIn terms of culture or ethnicity, very few states in Europe are homogenous. Linguistic divisions often generate or go hand in hand with other cleavages at the religious, cultural, social or demographic levels. What are the causes of community conflicts and why do some conflicts turn violent while frictions seem to subside in others? Do these conflicts have commonalities, and if so, why are some countries more successful than others in dealing with communal diversities at the political, social and cultural level? What tools and instruments are being used for the resolution of community conflicts? These are some of the issues the workshop, which is being held in the framework of the PEACECOM project, will be looking at.
PEACE-COM (Peace Processes in Community Conflicts – From Understanding the Roots of Conflicts to Conflict Resolution) analyses the causes and evolution of community conflicts in the Member States of the European Union and beyond. The general outline of the research project, some theoretical aspects, a selection of community conflicts being examined by the project, as well as conflicts not included in the PEACECOM project will be discussed at the workshop. The workshop aims to bring together scholars working in the field and interested individuals for the exchange of views and expertise, and the joint reflection on how the conflicts presented at the workshop can be resolved peacefully.
