ActivAge Final Conference - Overcoming the Barriers and Seizing the Opportunities of Active Ageing Policies in Europe
October 18th, 2005, Brussels, Belgium

In coming years, European societies will increasingly feel the strains of demographic ageing. Projected demographic imbalances between the generations are likely to have profound effects on European labour markets, social protection and pension systems, health care systems, and societal integration as a whole. This necessitates structural reforms at different levels but also, many argue, a paradigmatic shift towards greater individual empowerment and self-determination of all ages and at all stages of life, i.e. active ageing.

In this Conference the ActivAge project will present the final results of its three-year long research. More specifically, we will report on the challenges posed by ageing societies for different policy sectors, namely, the labour market, pension systems and the health sector. We will also be talking about the diffusion of the ‘active ageing’ paradigm in different countries and policy domains and the impact of this on civil society.

The ActivAge project has involved researchers from ten countries, namely, Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and the U.K. The project has produced country reports for different policy domains as well as comparative reports pointing at differences and similarities in national policies and advancing recommendations for the EU. The project was coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in Social Sciences (ICCR).

Back-to-back with this Conference there will be a workshop of the project eInclusion (on 17 th October 2005). The eInclusion project, financed by DG INFSO, looks at the opportunities offered within the ICT sector for promoting the accessibility to work and employment of older persons as well as persons with disability. Since the topics of the two projects are related, other researchers and interested persons might find it interesting to attend .

More information on the two projects can be read at the following Web Sites: www.iccr-international.org/activage and www.einclusion-eu.org.
